Inspired by Andrea’s son, Matthew’s House is an organization working to provide respite care for severely disabled children in her community. “the idea grew out of our own need for help. We want to provide a home-like environment, a place that families can trust and stay involved in their child’s life.” With the land already secured, Matthew’s House is currently raising funds to build and hopes to break ground this spring. mattshouse.ca
When Marie-Paule and her husband adopted their disabled son Christian in March 2000, it was a life-changing experience in more ways than one. “I also got involved as a volunteer, working with children with multiple disabilities and their families.” Christian is now 13, and inspired by his progress, she continues to volunteer with disabled kids in such programs as therapeutic horseback riding. She is also general manager of Fondation Melio, which supports programs for special needs children. fondation-melio.org
Brigitte and her family wanted to make a difference by helping those in need. “We started raising money with greeting cards painted by my son. Now in its third year, 213 children in Peru attend school with the proceeds.” With so much need in Peru, Brigitte started the Pure Art Foundation, a series of art-related initiatives that pay for such things as water, housing and other projects, like painting homes bright colours to bring colour to communities. “We’re using the power of art to heal.” pureartfoundation.org
